We cut the back a while ago when the case
was held together by a bunch of clamps. It served the purpose at the time,
but now looks like it has too many large gaps. Anyway, I want
to clean it up by cutting a new back.
Borrowing a trick from the vinyl
flooring people, Andrea uses some cut down tongue depressors and uses the CA
glue to position them square to the cabinet.
It
may look fragile, but the CA glue is holding the sticks in place very well.
She traces around the composite piece onto a fresh piece of plywood.

She once again uses the Festool Trion jigsaw to cut smoothly to the lines.
Now, that is a back that fits — much better. We will get some small brass
screws for fastening it into place.
It's another day and Beth is here to
help me finish up the chest — I hope.
She starts by carefully undoing the
filament tape that we used to hold the wood fronts in place.
The method that Andrea and I had used worked perfectly
except for this one drawer where the front wasn't flat to the drawer. Beth
fixed it by putting some fresh CA glue between the pieces and adding a clamp
to pull the pieces together. Other than that, all the drawers and front fit
very well.
All the drawers are okay now and Beth holds
the door in place. That is the last thing to do — install the hinges.
Don't you love that grain.
As I just said, these 10mm barrel hinges
have to be installed, but I don't want to come close to drilling the actual
chest until I have thoroughly jigged it and have practiced on some throwaway
MDF.
That will have to be for next week because with only 1mm on each
side of the drill, there is no room for any errors.
