New Product: "Working with new wood species: lyptus"

Once the jig is clamped in place, the cutting of the mortise is so very simple.

She tries the fit. It is close. Some judicious sanding will make the fit perfect. On to the other side.

Since the lid is exactly the same width as the case, Joslyn can flip the mortising jig over and align it with the other edge.

A bit of sanding and she fits all the hinge leaves.

The hinges fit well but are riding a little high in the mortises.

The router depth was set precisely so all it took was a little paring down the ridges on the sockets. A sharp chisel makes short work of this.

I don't think this view shows it, but one of the hinges is misaligned about 1/8" — ouch!  We will widen the case mortise and do a little patching. It won't show, but it still hurts.

I don't think I have ever used CA glue for structural joinery, but we did this time just so that we could get more done in the little time we had. We will add 3 brass screws next week. We would have now, but I don't have them.

It's a box with a hinged lid. Joslyn likes how it works so smoothly —  it makes all the fussing with the hinge sizing worth while.
Next week after we add the screws, we will trim the hinges flush with the inside. We have quite a few finishing tasks, but the little chest is going nicely and Joslyn is proving her interest in woodworking and for doing it right. For me, it is nice to see.
