New Product: "Working with new wood species: lyptus"

Since last week, Joslyn and I have been tinkering with the jig that we use for making mortises for the wood hinges. I think we have it just where we want it,

Next thing we want to do is to round over the ends of the lid hinge. For the mortise, our jig used a 3/8" bit in the router. So we need a 3/16" radius on the hinge. We started to make a jig to hold the hinge and then a pattern bearing bit would follow the shape, but it was so easy to make the radius corner one at a  time, that we went that direction for now.

A scrap of wood with 220 grit paper wrapped around does the trick.  Joslyn is careful to sand the sides a little bit and  then fit into the mortise.

For the tight radius of the corners, she just rolled and dragged the piece and then made a test fit. It went much faster than you would think — maybe 12 light passes on each corner.

With the hinges shaped to fit, Joslyn can now turn to cutting mortises in the back side of the chest unit. She will use the same jig as when cutting the lid, but she will only have to cut across the width of the back
She aligns the jig with the edge of the box.

    First one hinge.

Joslyn has flipped the jig over and has aligned it to this side of the box and had made her cut. She tries the hinge into the mortise to see if any fine tuning will be required this time.

Progress! That was easy. Now to the lid for the matching mortises.

It is time to cut the matching mortises in the lid. Joslyn carefully aligns the jig with the side of the lid and clamps it in place.
