Project — "Making a Silver Chest" - Domino Equal Spacing

On the face of the Domino, the center oblong hole is where the cutter comes out — see inset. There are two pins on either side of the cutter hole. These pins are spring retractable and are what make automatic spacing of the Domino work. When we use this procedure, no alignment marks are needed — none at all.

You start drilling the Domino holes by placing the  left registration pin at the left edge of the board and firmly against the end. With that positioning, you can turn the Domino on, make the plunge, retract it and move to make the next Domino hole. The first mortise is made.

Here is the first oblong Domino mortise. The arrow is pointing to that spring loaded retractable pin. Elena has moved the Domino about 1" away from the wood and slides the Domino to the right.

When the pin is near the first Domino mortise, she moves the Domino back against the wood. She can hear the pin slide into the first Domino mortise. She continues sliding the unit to the right until the pin stops against the right side of the first mortise. She makes her plunge for the 2nd mortise.

Elena has made her 2nd mortise and repeats the steps for the rest of the mortises on the board.  While you can't see what is happening, it is very easy to "go by feel".  If you get "lost", it is easy to back the Domino machine away far enough to see the mortise and pin and move the machine forward so that the pin goes into the mortise — and then slide the machine to the right until the pin stops it.

Drilling all these mortises using the automatic spacing technique takes very little time —
about 1 1/2 minutes for this board.

The mating board takes no longer, BUT you do need to remember to work from the right-hand edge and work moving the Domino machine left. That way the two boards will mate perfectly.

Elena uses the new glue pot to get glue for the glue up.  The pot and brush allow her to get a uniform coat over the edges and the Dominos/

She aligns the pieces and eases them together. The Dominos  fit easily in their spaces. And there was no need for marking any of the mortising centers — not even the first.

Elena completes the glue up of this panel. It goes very quickly using the automatic spacing procedure. If there is a "complaint", it is in the distance between the mortises. This is not a variable since the distances of the retractable pins are fixed. *
My take on it is this: the auto-spacing method is so quick, that even if the spacing is more than I might use, it goes so quickly, I will use it. Certainly the cost of the extra Dominos isn't significant compared to work time saved. And for kitchen/bath cabinets made from white melamine particle core board, this spacing might well give us the added joint strength we need in those cabinets.
We will try that next week.

* There is a Cross Stop accessory which will give us variable spacing.   I will get that and update this review.
