"Making an Under Table Storage Area

Well, we are back in the shop and ready to make some real progress with our under table storage. You can see that Elena is making use of the story stick she made last time.
She has too long pieces of white melamine particle core board. She will cut these to length and hopefully use them in the project.

She clamps a guide rail in position.

   And makes her cut.

We thought we could make use of more from the scrap pile, but there weren't any more large enough, so it is time to cut up a full panel.

The panels weigh just over 85#, and I should be helping her, but she lets gravity do its job. She just leans the panel towards the work table and down it comes.

Once on the table, it is quite easy to push it around.

She lines up the long guide rail so that her first cut will be to rip the entire length taking off 1/2". The panel is oversized by 1" just for this purpose. This will allow her to start with a good edge — without the many chips that come from handling along the way.

Making the cut is so easy. She just lets the guide rail guide the cut. It is easy and safe — and note that there is no sawdust visible.  The saw's built-in dust extractor  really works well. That is really appreciated with this man made material.

She has moved to the other side and has used her story stick to set the guide rail for the next cut.
We rarely show the boom arm, but not because we don't use it. We use it all the time, and I can't remember how we worked without it. You can see why.

A time out for a little planning. We want to build shelves that are deep enough to hold these Systainers — mainly the ones with screws and Domino tenons.
Actually, the shelves will have pullout drawers for the Systainers. We find that we can only get two per shelf, but there is enough room left for a small drawer for other things — like driver bits, measuring tapes, marking pens.

It is a stretch but Elena is able to make a complete cut across the sheet. The guide rail is clamped on one end and that seems to do the trick.

You couldn't make this cut with a circular saw safely.
