New Product Review   —  "CMT Pro Dado Set"

But I think we can do better. Rather than to measure the plywood or other material that will fit into the dado, then use that dimension to enter this table and then figure out the combination, then compute for the spacers — yikes... there has to be a simpler and better way.

It looks simple to just add the blades and spacers to the saw and make the same cut.

Unfortunately, bending over the saw to make little changes to the stack kills my back. I wanted to find a way to do the dado stack before I had to put the blades,  chippers, and spacers on the saw.

Here it is in the making. A very simple "trial and measure jig". I started by cutting two pieces of 1/2" MDF about  12" X 14".    I drilled a 5/8" hole through both. Then on one, I drilled a 3/4" hole.

I purchased a 5/8" by 2" bolt and pounded the hex head into the piece of MDF with the larger hole. I used a chisel to ease some of the corners. But when done, I had the head of the bolt captive on this piece of MDF and sunk enough to be just below the surface. Ain't pretty, but it works.

Then, I put the other piece over the bolt. I then had a sandwich of two pieces of MDF with a bolt pretty well straight and rigid.  I then added glue in between the two pieces of MDF and clamped the sandwich and let set over night.

And here is my jig. Simple enough isn't it. On the next page, we will go step-by-step in its use.
