Beth now
starts to visualize the wings or side panels. They could be cut short, curved, or in
a number of different shapes...
|
...or the same size as the case height.
After discussing each possibility, we decided to keep it simple and go with same height
side panels.
The height will be shortened by 1/4" to allow a 1/8" gap at the top
and bottom for clearance.

 |
Beth, changes from the rip blade to the
CMT General blade. This will give a very nice, crisp, cross cut of these small parts.
|
Beth has installed the Incra
Miter Gauge and now sets the Incra Stop. Rather than to measure the height of the box, she
places the box, itself, on the gauge, sets the stop and then moves the stop another
1/4" to give the 1/8" clearances at the top and bottom of the panel.

 |
It doesn't take long for her to have 24
side panels (4 extras) all exactly the same size.
|
Beth has brought the drill press guide
that she used earlier back to the bench. The wings are narrower, so using the same
centering methods as before, she locates new guide strips to hold the wings for drilling.
She is careful to allow for the 1/8" shorter height. She wants the final
assembly to have all the circles in a row.
|
 |
 |
At the drill press, she sets up to make
her cut.
|
She checks the fit.
|
 |
 |
Just to be sure, she takes the first
two pieces back to the bench to be sure that all the holes will line up correctly. They
do.

Beth's clock project
is coming nicely. Next, the base has to be cut and edged. Then, it is time for final
sanding, staining and finishing. The center clock panels will remain natural and be given
a high gloss finish, so that can be started now.
Next week, Beth will finish the clock project. I do think it is turning out
to be a very good, first WoodShopDemos-U student project.
