Rather than to run back and forth fine tuning the piece at the saw, I
nibble away the 90o end with the guillotine cutter which I have placed right on
the layout board. Cutting each of the cross pieces to the exact length is easy this way.

I pre-drill each screw hole and on the front side, I countersink.
I have been using 3
1/2" deck screws. With proper pre-drilling they have a good grip in these soft
boards. I have also glued each joint.
Here is the first side glued and screwed. It stands very square, as it
should since I assembled it with the pieces clamped to the layout board. The layout board
will also help me to get all 6 risers (3 units) assembled exactly alike.
I am using a
3/8" plug cutter to make a bunch of plugs out of the same stock.
The plugs are tapered slightly so they wedge themselves in the 3/8"countersunk holes.
A little carpenter's glue keeps them in place. I will saw them flush and sand the edge
once the glue has had a chance to set.
Well, here is
the finished product again. I will continue the building step-by-step next week. By
then, I should have the three done, stained and finished and holding books and magazines.
